Spring Interior Design Trends

As Spring arrives, so does the excitement of new interior trends, spring cleaning projects, and outdoor inspiration.  The latest interior trends include both warmer and cooler colour palettes, still remaining light and fresh for the season. The Earth Toned Naturals trend draws inspiration from the colours in nature, while the Nothing but Neutral Trend focusses on neutral tones and key investment pieces in the home.  Playful Minimalism encourages a minimalist base to build your own style on, while Classic Chrome brings a much-loved finish back into the forefront of design with a more modern adaptation.  Build inspiration and excitement from what these latest interior trends have to offer, as we explore how to bring these into your home.

The Earth Toned Naturals trend draws inspiration from natural, raw and handcrafted materials.  With a focus on complementary colours drawn from nature, this trend evokes a sense of being grounded within your home.

Key colours for this trend include rust and terracotta, greyed-off green, with pops of mustard and apricot pink.  These colours sit perfectly alongside finishes including warm toned woods, textured fabrics in earthy colours, natural stone and tiles.

Earth Toned Naturals can be included throughout the home, as well as alfresco and outdoor spaces, especially when designing open plan living that opens straight onto a garden.  Achieve this by concreting or tiling your kitchen and dining floor in the same surface that continues outdoors, or ensuring your kitchen, dining or living space has tall glass doors that open directly onto the outdoor space.  Fuse the indoor and outdoor areas together through similar furnishings and designated entertaining zones.

Introduce this trend into your interior by opting for warmer toned paint colours for your walls, such as off-white or light taupe, and ensure there are elements of natural timber, or timber laminates in your joinery.  If you like colour, you can also include coloured laminates or 2pac painted cabinetry in colours such as greyed off green or terracotta.

This trend is also about natural textures.  Selecting flooring with knotted woodgrains, tiles with slightly textured surfaces, and natural fibre carpets will help bring the earthy element into your home.

If permanent surface or architectural changes aren’t an option for you, you can simply add some freestanding furnishings and styling items to introduce this trend.  They key is to focus on texture, colour and materials.  For example, a wool or jute floor rug, rattan dining chairs, a textured throw rug in an earthy pop of colour, and some textured concrete vases in neutral tones or terracotta.

Next, the Nothing but Neutral trend is as much as the name describes and more.  While on the surface it may seem simply a safe and neutral choice, there is an added refinement in its execution.

The Nothing but Neutral trend primarily focusses on the built in and freestanding furnishings in your home, encouraging them to be long term investment pieces that promote a sense of luxury.  Careful selection of occasional chairs, artwork, lamps and lighting allow the dweller to linger a little longer when walking through the home, appreciating the careful and quality choice that’s been made.

A neutral colour palette of warm cream, taupe and brown allows for standout pieces to shine, while maintaining a calming and cosy environment.

With such a neutral colour palette it’s important to add additional emphasis on texture and detail, to prevent the space becoming too flat and lackluster.  This can be achieved by ensuring your architecture is a more traditional interior style, perhaps including decorative skirting boards and wall paneling, adding visual interest amongst the neutral surroundings.  If you’re trying to implement this trend into an existing home, add in some slightly textured sheer curtains, textured loop carpet or floor rugs, and freestanding furnishings in textures such as velvet, boucle or chunky weaves.  Opt for a couple of higher contrast colour items in a space, such as a light coloured occasional chair if the walls are a darker brown.

Hardware finishes in this trend are flexible, but are again encouraged in a more traditional style with finishes such as brushed nickel and dull aged brass.  The great thing about the Nothing but Neutral trend is that it can be layered upon as you gradually build up your collection of home furnishings over time.

Moving away from more traditional styles, the Playful Minimalism trend looks more to clean lines, curved edges and an overall contemporary and modern look.  This trend blends the simplicity of minimalism with touches of whimsy and personality.

With a purpose of providing a dreamlike escape, this trend can be perfect for a master bedroom suite, where a calming neutral base can give that sense of relaxation and escape.

The base of this trend is very minimal; clean lines, open spaces and a neutral colour palette.  When building the base for this trend through fixed finishes in the home, consider a white or off-white base, walnut toned wood cabinetry, porcelain benchtops and brushed nickel hardware.

Layer in the playful aspect of this trend with coloured elements, such as tiles, bed linen, bathroom towels etc.  Pops of colour can also be included as well as quirky décor, making this trend adaptable to your own personality and style.

The Playful Minimalism trend particularly works well with existing new homes which are often designed in a minimalist way, fresh for new home buyer to layer in their own style.

Lastly, is the Classic Chrome trend.  The polished chrome finish is back on the radar for interiors, but in a new modern way.  The Classic Chrome trend that has resurfaced can suggest both a futuristic or glamorous outcome, mainly being introduced into interiors through freestanding furnishings, such as chairs, lighting and accessories.

Chrome surfaces bring a reflective quality that enhances light and creates a sense of openness, having the ability of making spaces feel larger.  Soften the appearance of chrome by pairing it alongside highly textured surfaces, such as plush rugs, sherpa fabric chairs and linen curtains, creating a cosy element alongside the sleek and smooth finish of chrome.  Similarly, pairing it with walnut woods, helps soften as well as provide a colour contrast in a space.

Chrome's cool, shiny appearance also complements a variety of color schemes, predominantly aligning with cooler tones of grey, blue and denim.  Pairing these cooler tones with a warm white wall colour, burnt orange accent walls and walnut wood furniture helps retain an inviting warmth into a space.

Adapting well into minimalist, contemporary and some more traditional styles, chrome can be added in smaller or larger scale items, depending on the desired outcome.  Classic Chrome is a versatile choice for those looking to inject a bit of glamour and futuristic appeal into their interiors.

As you refresh your space for the season, these interior design trends offer a wide array of styles to explore, each bringing its own unique flair to your home. Embrace any of these trends to infuse your home with renewed energy and create a space that reflects your personal style.
