How to prepare your home before moving in

Preparing the home, you’re moving into is just as important as packing up the space you’re leaving behind. Make it seamless by completing the following tasks in advance.

Set up the internet. To ensure a connection on moving day, contact your provider at least 2 weeks in advance, especially if your home has not previously been connected to the NBN. And make sure to take your existing modem with you!

Do a deep clean. Make time to clean your home when it’s completely empty, not on moving day while you’re also trying to unpack! Focus on the kitchen, bathroom, and carpets, and wipe down any surfaces, windows, blinds, and appliances.

Map out your furniture. Working out what will go where before you move will help streamline the unpacking process, allowing you to group items by room.

De-clutter. The more you do this before you move, the less to pack and transport. Start with rooms or items you use the least, like spare bedrooms and decorative pieces.

Properly brief your removalist. Don’t skip over details like stairs or heavy items like a piano as this will only add costs down the track. Also, advise your removalist in advance if you need help dismantling furniture on the day, and if you have any house plants.

Prepare a moving day essentials box. Pack a box of essential items you’ll need on moving day and ensure this is packed last and unloaded first. Key items include towels, crockery, cutlery, chargers, toiletries, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, soap, a change of clothes for the next day and bedding.

Pet-proof the backyard. To avoid pets escaping through a backyard fence on moving day, patch up gaps or holes in advance.
