Easy DIY upgrades that add value to your home
Improving your property’s look and feel doesn’t necessarily have to cost a small fortune.
Here’s 6 easy DIY updates you can do yourself.
Take care of easy repairs. Most small repairs are straightforward and usually don’t require a professional. Replace the mesh fly screens yourself, apply some WD-40 to squeaky door hinges, and sub-out light fittings for store-bought options. The same goes for other small fixes, including leaking taps, loose screws or handles, clogged drains and scuffs on the walls.
Enhance your garden. Invigorate the garden with some new plants (or just tidy up your existing ones), replace exterior lighting, and swap out decorative elements like your house numbers and mailbox. Landscape the courtyard and deck spaces and pressure-clean mouldy driveways.
Spruce up your walls and floors with a new coat of paint. All you need is the right brushes, rollers, drop cloths and some old clothes), paint and a few spare weekends. Go for colours that have timeless appeal – like neutral whites, greys, and beige. While you’re at it, hire a steam cleaner for your carpets, stain your hardwood floors, and regrout tiles in your bathroom and laundry.
Give your kitchen a facelift. For a quick, cost-effective, high impact solution, repaint cabinets and drawers, in neutral shades or add a bit of colour. Swap out hardware like knobs and handles and replace your old taps with new fittings.
Don’t forget the bathroom. A lick of paint can make a big difference. You can also get rid of old, discoloured grout and replace it with a fresh application to make your bathroom feel cleaner. Switch up your taps, shower head and towel rail with new ones and replace a cracked and corroded vanity mirror.
Refresh your outdoor areas. Tidy up your garden or courtyard, re-sand and stain decking and any other wooden surfaces, add a few new plants, and ensure any outdoor entertaining areas are neat and appealing.
